Conference Participation – Direct Injection 2-Stroke Engines International Conference 2024
Dr. Yizhuo Feng attended the Direct Injection 2-Stroke Engines International Conference 2024 held in Graz, Austria, from 26–27 September 2024 (Conference/Paper Link).
At the conference, Dr. Feng presented their research titled:
“Assessment of Performance of a 2-Stroke Boosted Uniflow Scavenged Direct Injection Combustion Engine (BUSDICE) with E-Fuel.”
The study focused on evaluating the performance of the BUSDICE, a novel two-stroke engine concept with strong fuel-flexibility potential. Using a 1D simulation model complemented by tabulated chemistry for laminar flame behaviour, the research assessed the engine’s operation with e-fuels—specifically methanol and ethanol—and compared the results to conventional gasoline.
Key findings from the study include:
Under part-load conditions, methanol and ethanol show combustion characteristics and thermal efficiency comparable to gasoline.
Under high-load conditions, both e-fuels deliver higher thermal efficiency, supported by their higher octane numbers.
NOx and soot emissions are significantly reduced when using methanol and ethanol, due to their lower combustion temperatures and high inherent oxygen content.
The results highlight the strong potential of an e-fuel-powered BUSDICE as a compact, low-emission, and carbon-neutral solution, particularly suitable as a range extender for future electric vehicles.
